I see that no one of you have made a blog as yet. Anyways .... ;)
The purpose of this SEO experiment is to learn and earn together, and I think the best way to learn is by trying practical than theory. So, it would be great, if you can start up things quickly.
I will elaborate on niche and blog name, to help you in selecting a blog. Here is a brand new blog I have made on recipe niche :

This is a blog made only for sake of experiment and it has nothing but Junk Content. I will use this blog to show you how to start from level 0 and attain traffic by using SEO tricks.
Now this blog will concentrate on sharing recipes. So its niche is recipe. Although recipe can also have sub categories like Veg and Non Veg, Continental and Chinese etc, but for this experiment, I have kept it broad on recipe.
After we are done with the first step, of selecting a niche and a relevant blog name for our blog, the next step is to plan some SEO for it. The purpose here is to connect our blog with certain sites, so that when ever, we write a new post on our blog, it will spread around using these linked sites. This will help us getting some visitors from those sites to our blog.
For linking blog, the best way to get started is to use blog aggregators. Blog aggregator sites are specifically made for blog feeds, and once linked with them, our post gets automatically visible there (though feeds) and in this way, we can expect some targeted traffic for our blog. More important thing is that this linking helps us our blog becoming more popular in search engines like google, which is our ultimate aim, as at the end of the day, its google, from where, we will get most of our traffic from !
Our first step after making a blog will be to make a few postings on our new blog, as blog aggregators do not accept post less blogs. After making a few postings, we need to register and then submit our blogs to these aggragatos. Here is a list of the popular ones :

2. www.indli.com (Hindi as well as English aggregator)

4. www.rambhai.com
5. www.blogprahari.com (Hindi as well as English aggregator )

So, the next step is go to the above sites, register, and then add your blog url in those sites. I have already done the above linking task for my recipe blog, and I will let you know about its update in future post.

SEO Live Demo - Day 1; Part 2 - Selecting a 'niche' and blog name
In the previous post, we discussed about basics of SEO, and important of niche. In this post we will discuss further on these topics, as well as try to allot a niche and a suitable blog to all of us. As this is a experiment, and we need to discuss and be in continuous touch with each others progress, you are requested to participate and respond here through comments ;)
So as I can see, this blog has two followers till now. So I would like both of you to kindly do the undermentioned. Others can do the same, as they follow the blog and join this experiment.
For the time being here is what you have to start with :
1. Make a blog on http://www.blogger.com/ . For this purpose, I recommend you to better make a separate gmail account by registering to http://www.gmail.com/ Once you are done with it , go to http://www.blogger.com/ and make a blog using your gmail account name and password.
2. The url (web address) of the blog will be yourblogname.blogspot.com where 'yourblogname' will be the name of your blog. While choosing it, you will first need to select a name while registering your blog chosen by you while registering to blogger. This name should be well thought of, as the name of the blog (known as domain or sub-domain name) is the first and foremost requirement of search engine optimization. As I have stated in my earlier post, you need to target a particular niche.
For example, if you plan to target Roger Federer for optimization, you need to have a blog name like rogerfederer.blogspot.com or roger-federer.blogspot.com or rogerfederederfan.blogspot.com, or something equally meaningful and suitable to the purpose of your blog. What I am trying to say is that, you have to start things with a plan, as in SEO, all these little things and efforts will combine together and give good results in a long run of our experiment.
So, first you need to register a SEO friendly blog name with blogger to get things started. Do suggest some more niche in the comments, as per your interest, and we will discuss and finalize a good blog name for all of you separately.

SEO Live Demo : Day -1; Part 1
All right then, here are details of the tasks for day 1 for our experiment.
Of Search Engine Optimization and Making a 'brand new blog' :
I repeat the word 'brand new' for a simple reason because this experiment will require a brand new blog. You might already have one or more blogs, but for sake of this experiment, you will have to make a new one. This way, all of us can start things fresh, and keep a track on our daily progress.
Now the question arises, what kind of blog should one make? The answer is that, as we are here to attain certain goals, therefore, we need to plan everything right from selecting the blog name to optimising it for visitors, and earnings. So, for this purpose, we need to make a 'niche blog'. What 'niche' means is that, our blog will foucs on a particular subject, and we will optimisze the blog, with respect to the subject of the blog.
For example, sports is a subject, but tennis is a niche; Roger Federer, a legendary tennis player, is again a ninche (a better niche I would say). So, if we make a blog on sports, it will have to compete with all the other sports blogs and websites. But when we select tennis as a ninche, our competition reduces to tennis related websites, and when we make a blog or site on Roger Federer, the player, our competition further reduces to blogs and sites mainly related to Roger Federer.
Now the question arises, whom are we comepeting with ? the answer is that we are competing for attaining higher rankings in search engine like gogle. What it means is that when we make a blog on Reger Federer, and try to optimize it by adding more and more information in it about Roger Federer, search engines like google will slowly recognize our blog's worth (for our niche - Roger Federer in this case), and will give us good standing in its search results. Here is how google works :
If I am a roger Federer fan, and I am looking for some information about him. I will go to a search engine like google and write something like "latest news about roger federer". So what google will do is list all sites that have my search query (in this case "latest news about roger federer" is called seach query or keywords) in its result. Now, if we make a blog on Federer, and have optimized it properly, there are good chances that google will show our website or blog on its front page (in top 10 or so) in its result. In this way, we get a chance to get a targeted visitor to our blog.
This is the basic aim of Search Engine Optimization,i.e., optimizing or enabling a blog or website, in such a way that it stands in good position in search engines like google.
How to attain that position is what we are trying to learn from this experiment ;)

This blog is meant for showing a live demonstration of SEO (search engine optimization).The experiment will start from 1st Jan 2011 and will last for three months. During these 3 months, or 90 days, we will learn how to make a brand new blog, and optimize it for getting traffic using SEO techniques. The aim of the experiment will be to learn various ways of driving targeted traffic to you blog, and how to convert that traffic into earnings.
You don't need to have any knowledge of SEO or blogging to begin with. All I would expect would be hard working and sincere people, honest with their work, consistent with their actions, patient with their result and most importantly ready to help each other out, and happy to see each other learn and earn together ;)
